Why Every High-Performing Leader Needs a Strong Inner Circle
As a founder or executive, you're accustomed to being in the spotlight. You set the vision, call the shots, and shoulder immense responsibility… Here's something I've learned from coaching hundreds of leaders: no matter how talented, driven, or visionary you are, you can't— and shouldn't —do it all alone.
Every world-class athlete I've coached and every high-performing founder I've coached have had one thing in common—an extraordinary group of people around them supporting their mission. This isn't just a casual network or a group of friends to vent to. It's a tribe, a crew that knows how to challenge you, hold you accountable, and help you break through those inevitable blocks.
Why is creating your circle so critical?
↳ Firstly, accountability. High achievers thrive on accountability, and often, the higher you climb, the fewer people there are to hold you genuinely accountable. Your team may hesitate to call you out, your family might not fully grasp the unique pressures you're facing, and your friends, while supportive, might not challenge you enough. You need peers who can give it to you straight, who can recognize when you're slipping, and reflect on what you need to get you back on track.
↳ Secondly, perspective. Isolation breeds blind spots. You need people who can reflect back on what you're missing, challenge your assumptions, and broaden your thinking. This is how you keep growing, even when you're at the top.
↳ Finally, genuine support. Leadership can be lonely—I've seen it countless times; it’s one of the most common issues leaders share with me: how alone they feel. A well-curated group doesn't just push you; they also lift you. They're there to remind you of your strengths when you're down, celebrate your victories when you're flying, and offer genuine empathy and insight when you're stuck.
So, how do you build this tribe?
Be intentional: Identify what you need most—accountability, fresh ideas, emotional support—and seek people who genuinely align with these needs.
Be vulnerable: Trust deepens when you show authenticity. Let your guard down, share your struggles, and allow others to do the same.
Commit regularly: Find a group of peers or a coach-led leadership circle that meets consistently. Treat these with the same seriousness you treat board meetings or investor calls.
I've personally experienced and seen firsthand the transformative power of finding your people. Don't underestimate the impact that the right group can have on your leadership, growth, and overall happiness.
